The Lion is known as the ‘King of Beasts’ The shoulders and forelegs of these animals are tremendously powerful. Lions are built for strength not for speed. They can weigh up to 230 kilograms. Most adult males measure about 3 metres from nose to tail tip. The males have manes. Lions are not easy to spot in the veld because they are very well camouflaged with their yellowish-brown coats. They have gold coloured eyes which see well in the dark when they do most of the hunting. Lionesses are the more effective hunters. Lions are social animals forming prides comprising one to three males and several females and cubs.
