These friendly little birds are very common residents in South Africa and are not shy of human habitation. When not breeding, flocks of them occur in farmlands and cattle kraals. They forage while hopping on the ground, often in the company of other birds. Their main diet consists of seeds but they also eat insects, larvae, buds and scraps from feeding trays.
