While we might have only dipped our toes into 2021, its already proven to be the whole 2020 jam-packed into a few short weeks. Our Covid infection rate is at its highest, we're in lockdown again and it's starting to feel a little bit like we won't be catching a break anytime soon.
If we want to make it through this and come out stronger on the other side then we have to learn some strategies to keep us breathing when all the outside information starts to become suffocating. Despite the way you might feel, the show must go on. Good news is that the show is yours too and you deserve to put on a great show. Here are a few tips to keep you centered and to help you through the tough times.
1. Create a mindset of abundance
Eliminate the scarcity mindset and replace it with abundance. A scarcity mindset creeps in with negativity and the feelings of not being or having enough and lead to envy, guilt and anger about others and about the world. Shift to an abundance mindset by focusing on strengths, opportunities and on what is currently working and expand on those. See the positivity and the excitement in your life and open yourself up to the endless opportunities that are to come.
2. Start a workout routine and get active
This sounds so easy but somehow it's one of the toughest. It can be as simple as a morning walk or you can try yoga or strength training. Sometimes the first thing we want to do when times get tough is curl up in a ball and eat the equivalent of our own body weight in junk food...but this serves no one. Get active and stick to it, your routine will help ground you and help you feel in control when crisis arrises.
3. Practice daily affirmations
Repeating daily affirmations helps to reprogram the unconscious mind for success. While it may seem silly to tell yourself 10 times a day that 'you are worth it and that good things are to come' it sometimes needs to be down. Sadly, many of us have been hardwired to believe we aren't enough and we can't succeed and reach our full potentials. Daily affirmations help you let go of the negativity and force you to say the good out loud. When saying your daily affirmations always feel with all your heart and believe what you are saying. When you say "I am strong and I love myself" -really feel the feelings and believe. 4. Take time to unwind and destress
Schedule in some alone time where you can do nothing 'guilt-free' and make sure you use that time to relax, rather than stew on any other issues. Do something you love and that you find relaxing. Some of our favourite things to do to unwind - cook a healthy meal, watch a show with subtitles so you become more immersed in it, take a slow relaxing walk or a long bath. Whatever you need to calm your mind and relax.
5. Spend time in nature
Head out into nature by going for a walk or spend some time in your local park. Spending time with nature uplifts your mood, is good for your well being and your immunity. Even if its just with your pot plants because going out into nature these days isn't as easy as it used to be. Indoor plants help reduce stress and automatically make you feel uplifted. If you can't head out you can start in door gardening, it relieves stress, boosts creativity, productivity, and focus, and promotes recovery. 6. Remember you are not alone and we are all in this together
We've heard this a million times but when the going gets tough, sometimes instead of the tough getting going, the tough feels alone and curls into a ball. Reach out and don't stop reaching out. Pick up the phone and hear the voice of your loved ones, call them on zoom or face time. When you head out to shop or go to work, connect with those you see, give them a smile and be kind. We're all going through a hard time and even a smile can make it seem a little better.
